Every year I see a massive increase in the number of organisations looking to provide services at Christmas for people who are homeless.
It it is fantastic when people look toward the well-being of society’s most vulnerable at any time of year and I commend anybody who looks to alleviate the suffering experienced by people whose fate has cast them onto the streets.
My concern is that our guests are inundated with good will during December but can be swept aside as an inconvenience in August as Edinburgh’s social Zeitgeist turns toward the Festival and the joys of a summer holiday.
With that in mind, I’d like some of you to make a New Year’s Resolution now and pledge to do at least one day of volunteering in August. Volunteering makes a huge difference at all times of the year but volunteers are extra precious in the summer.
